JUST IN: Serious infighting rocks Nelson Chamisa’s MDC Alliance

MDC infighting in Victoria Falls is continuing unabated following the suspension of a councillor on allegations of undermining an elected party official, barely two weeks after the suspension of the Mayor, Councillor Somvelo Dlamini.

Events over the past three weeks in Victoria Falls have demonstrated the growing disunity and factionalism within the opposition MDC party, according to political analysts.

After suspending the Victoria Falls Mayor for failing to step down from the post, the MDC has suspended Victoria Falls Ward 10 Councillor, Nkanyiso Sibindi on allegations of insulting the party’s Matabeleland North provincial chairperson, Prince Dubeko Sibanda.

In a letter addressed to the suspended councillor who is also the party’s Hwange West youth assembly organising secretary, Sibanda informed Sibindi that he has been relieved of his duties for contravening the party’s constitution.

Sources close to the developments say MDC leader Nelson Chamisa has also shown huge interest in the ongoing fights in Victoria Falls and is allegedly seeking to impose Ward 1 Councillor Margaret Valley as the new mayor.

According to information gathered, the MDC leader has allegedly summoned the Victoria Falls councillors to the party’s headquarters to whip them into line.

While it is clear that recent recalls and suspensions are aimed at silencing dissenting voices and consolidating power, MDC Provincial Chairperson Prince Dubeko Sibanda downplayed the infighting, suggesting that the developments are a disciplinary process.

“This is a clear issue of trying to instil discipline within the MDC party. Every member who joins the party must understand that there is a certain decorum that is expected of them,” he said.

Political Analyst, Richard Mahomva says developments in Matabeleland North point to growing divisions in the MDC and a total disregard of democratic principles.

“This raises so much alarm considering that also the mayor from Victoria Falls faced such an unceremonious exit from office and at a bigger level this reveals the culture of democracy in MDC. Given the autonomy to govern the nation we would see greater undemocratic tendencies prevailing,” said Mahomva

Fireworks are expected at the MDC led Victoria Falls council next meeting, amid rumours that the party is allegedly planning to expel the third councillor in the ongoing factional fights.

Meanwhile, the suspended Victoria Falls Mayor, Councillor Somvelo Dlamini has approached the High Court challenging his recall. Dlamini has cited Chamisa and other party officials as respondents in his court application.
