ZANU PF Member of Parliament for Magunje Constituency Cecil Kashiri has been arrested for using a Murowa Diamonds bill of entry to illegally import his Ford Ranger, thereby evading paying over US$3,600 customs duty.
Kashiri is said to have connived with a Zimbabwe Revenue Authority customs official who is yet to be arrested.
He will be back in court on April 24 and he will be out of custody.
Allegations are that from September 2019 to December 2019, Kashiri planned to defraud ZIMRA by importing a Ford Ranger from South Africa without paying duty.
It is claimed that on September 4, Kashiri planned with a customs official who is yet to be arrested and they used a bill of entry used by Murowa Diamonds on February 6, 2019, as if that document had been used to import the vehicle.
By using the fake bill of entry, the duo implied that Kashiri had paid duty for the vehicle when in actual fact the document had nothing to do with his purchase.
On September 11, indications are that Kashiri went to ZIMRA where he connived with the customs official who wrote and signed a letter on behalf of the manager indicating that Kashiri had lost his original customs clearance certificate and confirming that the car had been cleared for registration.
The customs official is said to have connived with other officials to register the car into the ZIMRA system, leading to the registration of the car in the central vehicle registry under registration number AFE0268.
As a result of the alleged fraudulent act, ZIMRA lost US$3, 646 in unpaid duty.
