A 23-year-old gold panner from Zvishavane stabbed a rival suitor in a fight over a well endowed woman.
Clever Mubaiwa of Bara Village under Chief Masunda pleaded guilty to assault when he appeared before Zvishavane magistrate Archie Wochiunga.
He blamed his behaviour on beer saying he could not control himself.
“I was under the influence of beer as l had been drinking before the incident. I deeply regret my actions and I am very sorry especially to the complainant,” he said.
Magistrate Wochiunga sentenced him to nine months in prison saying a custodial sentence was mandatory to deter other would-be offenders.
“It is good that you are sorry for what you did and you also pleaded guilty without wasting the court’s time.
“But the honourable court cannot just let you go without a sentence because of the magnitude of the crime that you committed. You are therefore sentenced to nine months in prison. Three months is suspended on condition of good behaviour,” he said.
The court heard that on February 28, around 11 pm, Mubaiwa met Tanaka Dubai, who was in the company of a Vincent Chandada at an outdoor night club in Zvishavane.
Mubaiwa and Chandada were involved in an altercation over relations with a curvy woman. Dubai then intervened and Mubaiwa stabbed him with a knife on the right side of the chest.
He was immediately rushed to hospital and the matter was reported to the police leading to Mubaiwa’s arrest. Lloyd Mavhiza prosecuted.
