A POLICE officer ran for dear life to a police station after sand poachers attacked him with fists accusing him of always chasing them away from an area where they poach sand.
The drama filled incident that attracted the attention of members of the public happened last week on Friday.
According to a source who witnessed the incident Constable Peaceful Moyo (27) who is stationed at Luveve Police Station was cycling to his workplace when Blessing Manatsi, Nqobizitha Sithole, Nicholas Moyo, Blessing Nyadzi and Foster Maphosa who had blocked the way emerged from the bush accusing him of being fond of tormenting them.
“They confronted him while vowing to finish him off and accused him of being fond of chasing them away when he finds them poaching sand. They took turns to assault him with fists while kicking him as well,” said the source.
The police officer, the source said, managed to escape and showed a clean pair of heels to a police station. Later he returned with four other police officers.
“They went to Chigumira shops in the same suburb, where he identified Nqobizitha and Blessing leading to their arrest. The trio of Moyo, Sithole and Maphosa are still at large,” said the source.
Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident.
“We strongly warn members of the public against resisting arrest and fighting police officers. When they are confronted by police officers it is best to co-operate and follow the due course of the law. Violence is never a solution as it is retrogressive.”
