IN A CHILLING case of murder, two illegal gold panners bludgeoned their colleague John Matendere (25) with an axe over US$40 and killed him while his wife watched.
The incident happened on Saturday at Matendere’s home in Makwikwi village under Chironde cooperative during a midnight attack.
Efforts to get a comment from the Police were futile but Ward 19 councillor, Brian Chiteme confirmed the tragedy in an interview with The Mirror.
The Mirror understands that Cady Gombe (25) and Kelvin Mbiri (24) from Chironde in Makwikwi village Shurugwi are still at large after allegedly committing the crime.
Sources said that the suspects and the deceased were illegal miners at Wandara Mine and they had a misunderstanding over sharing of money and Matendere eventually won the argument.
This did go down well with the other two who plotted to attack Matendere at night. They went to the deceased’s place at around 11pm and force opened the door while he was sleeping with his wife. They put a knife to the head of Matendere’s wife and ordered her to keep quiet.
They struck the deceased twice on the head using an axe and on his body as well.
Chiteme said Matendere was admitted at Gweru Provincial Hospital where he died a few days later.
“We lost our son after misunderstandings arose over the sharing of money. They struck the deceased with an axe in full view of his wife. Burial for Matendere was expected yesterday (27.08.20) after the suspects’ families agreed to pay five beasts,” said Chiteme.
