The Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (ZUPCO) has increased bus fares by 100% with effect from Saturday, 5 September 2020.
Bus fares have been hiked from ZWL$8.00 to US$16.00, while kombi fares have been increased from ZWL$16.00 to ZWL$32.00 per trip.
Just over a month ago, the transport utility hiked bus fares by the same margin. ZUPCO chief executive Evaristo Madangwa said then:
“The price of fuel has gone up and operating costs have also increased. By adjusting the fares upwards, we will be able to improve efficiency.”
Meanwhile, illegal transport operators (Mushikashika) are charging the equivalent of US$0.50 or ZWL$45.00 for short trips which makes ZUPCO kombis cheaper in comparison.
