OPPOSITION MDC-T youths who took over Morgan Richard Tsvangirai (MRT) House last week have accused secretary general Douglas Mwonzora of threatening them with expulsions and recalls from their elected positions, Zim Morning Post has learnt.
The youths claimed Mwonzora was garnering for the MDC-T party presidency at any cost even if it meant working with Zanu PF.
“When we joined Mwonzora, we thought it was important to get back to the party constitution and unite ahead of the 2023 elections.
“But now that we want to implement the party constitution, Mwonzora wants to have us fired from the party,” an MDC-T party insider told Zim Morning Post.
Among the youths said to be facing the axe are Batanai Masunda (the Epworth Local Board chairperson) and Harare province youths assembly secretary and youth chairperson, Paul Gorekore.
Masunda was one of the councillors who jumped ship from the MDC Alliance following the Supreme Court judgment in March which ordered the party to revert to its 2014 structures.
The youths claim they took over the MRT House to preserve its unity and strength against Zanu PF and were never consulted by MDC Alliance president, Nelson Chamisa or the G40.
“We did not consult any of the party leaders, both Chamisa and Khupe, because we knew they would not agree with the methods we employed so we decided to force them to the negotiating table.
“We want to be a strong opposition party and not to allow party leaders to dine with Zanu PF because they are scared to face leaders,” the party insider continued.
The MDC-T youths who participated in the capture of the MRT House said they were impressed with their move so far as they had managed to convince Abednico Bhebhe and Morgen Komichi to buy into the idea.
“Bhebhe has agreed to meet us and Komichi is already part of the process.
“One major obstacle to the unification of the party is Chamisa, Mwonzora and Khupe while we have no doubt that (Elias) Mudzuri will support us,” the insider stated.
The party insider further said their major obstacle was Chamisa who he said was being pulled back by Tendai Biti and Welshman Ncube, who are both not eligible to contest at the Extra Ordinary Congress (EOC).
“As MDC-T youths, we know that if we had gone to the EOC, we wouldn’t be in this mess and Chamisa would have won together with Khupe, hence we now want to correct that but Chamisa is scared to lose his allies Biti and Ncube, who cannot contest at the EOC,” the insider said.
The insider said the best way to defeat Zanu PF in the 2023 general elections was through a united MDC party and the process would only start with the EOC.
