Liberation war hero Cde Phumelela Khumalo, who died on the 3rd of this month, has been buried at his rural home in Masholomoshe in Gwanda district.
Cde Khumalo died this Wednesday after a short illness.
In his eulogy, Matabeleland South Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Cde Abednico Ncube lauded Cde Khumalo for sacrificing his life for the freedom of the country.
“Cde Khumalo is not an ordinary man, but one who showed courage and strength as he stood against the white minority regime and gave his life for the liberation of this country.
“We are grateful to the President for seeing it fit to confer Cde Khumalo liberation war hero’s status,” he said.
Representatives of the ruling Zanu pf party paid tribute to Cde Khumalo for remaining true and loyal to the party.
“What I can tell you about this man lying here today is that he was he was an honest man, a straight talker and unifier who believed in building the party,” said a Zanu pf representative, Daniel Dube.
War veterans representative, Cde Denzel Lubimbi weighed in, ““Cde Khumalo will be remembered for his immense role in fighting for the country’s freedom and for dedicating his life after independence for the betterment of his beloved nation.”
Cde Khumalo participated in the liberation struggle after receiving military training in Zambia in 1977. After independence he played an active role in party activities till the time of his death.
He is survived by wife Sinwinile Moyo and five children.
