A TRAIN driver died on spot while a two fitters and a guard were injured when a goods train derailed in Nyazura on Tuesday afternoon.
The train was heading to Beira from Harare when the accident occurred between at around 1pm on Tuesday.
National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) Spokesperson, Nyasha Maravanyika said the goods train was ferrying chrome.
The driver of the goods train was trapped and had to be removed on Wednesday morning due to heaviness of the locomotive.
“We had an accident on March 9 and it occurred at Tsungwezi river in Nyazura, it was heading to Beira carrying chrome.
“The train had a runaway in which it ended up not being controllable resulting in the derailment.
“Two fitters and NRZ guard were injured and were ferried to the hospital but unfortunately the driver was trapped.
“He had to be removed on Wednesday in the morning after the fire brigade team faced some challenges due to the heavy locomotive.”
“The train had some chrome order.
“We pray for the quick recovery of the injured crew and our sincere condolences on the loss of our driver.
“Our team is on the ground to make sure everything is restored.”
About 200m of the track was extensively damaged at the scene.
