A 29-YEAR-OLD Rusape man who rap_ed a woman four times was last week sentenced to 20 years in jail by a Rusape regional magistrate.
The horrific se_xual assault was perpetrated by Tawanda Gorekore of Tikwiri on the outskirts of Rusape.
After each se_xual encounter, Gorekore would instruct the victim to take a bath as he kept guard. When he appeared before regional magistrate, Mr Francis Mapfumo, Gorekore was facing four counts of rap_e.
Mr Mafumo convicted him and sentenced him to 20 years in jail.
One year was suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.
Gorekore, who was a self-prophesed actor, had pleaded not guilty to the charges, but was convicted due to overwhelming evidence.
Prosecutor, Ms Event Dhliwayo, said the victim is in her 30s.
She was attacked four times on February 11 as her mother-in-law (name withheld to protect the victim’s identity) watched helplessly.
The two women had retired to bed in a kitchen hut when the convict pounced on them, threatening to set the hut on fire if they refused to open the door.
The victim’s mother-in-law opened the door while holding a torch, and identified the accused.
“The accused asked for their mobile phones and money, but the complainants could not produce any.
“He went on to rap_e the complainant in the presence of her mother-in-law,” said Ms Dhliwayo.
The victim cried but Gorekore didn’t stop. Instead he threatened to kill her, the court heard.
“The complainant managed to tear the T-shirt that Gorekore was wearing and kept a small piece of cloth,” said Ms Dhliwayo.
Police conducted investigations and were able to arrest Gorekore using that piece of cloth and the description given by the two women.
The torn T-shirt was recovered, and both the complainant and her mother-in-law positively identified Gorekore as the perpetrator. Throughout the trial, Gorekore gave contradicting accounts about his whereabouts on that fateful day.
In sentencing Gorekore, Mr Mapfumo said rogue elements like him deserve to be removed from society.
