A MBARE man landed in the dock yesterday after he and his accomplices reportedly stole US$166 000 that was in a safe during an armed robbery.
Justin Chibaya, 37, was not asked to plead when he appeared before Harare magistrate Dennis Mangosi who referred him to the High Court for bail consideration.
Allegations are that on May 4 at around 8:50pm, Chibaya, in the company of Muchineripi Rambanepasi and Collen Chibowa, who are already in custody, and five other accomplices who are still at large approached the complainant who was performing guard duties at number 10 Conald Road in Graniteside, Harare driving in his Honda fit.
They confronted the complainant who was manning the premises and one of the robbers produced a pistol and ordered the guard to lie down on his back.
They reportedly tied the guard’s hands and legs from behind with cable ties and put him on the front seat of their getaway vehicle.
One of the robbers remained guarding the security person whilst the other three robbers searched for office keys and found them in the guard room.
They reportedly used the keys to open the main doors and used an unknown object to force open the office door.
Whilst inside, they took a blue safe containing US$166 000 and loaded it in their getaway car.
They drove away and dumped the guard, who was still tied, near Mukuvisi River along Ardbernnie Road.
Part of the stolen money, US$11 000, was recovered from Chibaya.
