A MAN was moered to death on Sunday night, 1 August after he allegedly tried to abduct a six-year-old.
The man originally from Kraaifontein was seen dragging the boy, who was playing outside the house in Siyanyanzela squatter camp in Grabouw Western Cape.
The boy’s mum chased the suspect while screaming for help from residents, who came running. The boy was taken away and the man was seriously beaten.
The boy’s gogo told the SunTeam she was grateful to the residents for saving her grandson.
“That man doesn’t stay here. He claimed he had come from Kraaifontein. He begged people to let him go,” she said.
“He could not explain why he was dragging the child. He said he was playing with him.”
A resident asked how the man could claim he was playing with the boy when the child had tears on his cheeks and begged him to let him go.
“He thought the residents are dumb. That is why we moered him up,” said the resident.
Another resident said the man was beaten with anything that they could lay their hands on.
Cop spokesman Colonel Andre Traut said the man was stoned to death and cops are investigating.
“The incident is believed to be motivated by vigilantism. The circumstances are under investigation,” he said.
