THE Carnarvon Regional Court sentenced a Northern Cape father to eight years imprisonment on Wednesday, 11 August, for attempting to rap_e his then eight-year-old daughter.
The incident happened in February 2019 at their home in Carnarvon.
Colonel Mashay Gamieldien said the 42-year-old father had threatened to se_xually abuse his daughter on several occasions and told her not to inform anyone.
“During the evening of 22 February 2019, the victim made a bed on the floor while her brother slept on the bed. While sleeping her father again attempted to rap_e her but the victim’s brother intervened. He went to report the incident at the police station and the accused was arrested the same evening,” Gamieldien said.
Gamieldien said the accused remained in custody until he was sentenced and his name was recorded in the National Register for Se_x Offenders.
Meanwhile, the Provincial Head of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Se_xual Offences in the province, Brigadier Nicky Mills pleaded with the communities to report and reject abusers.
