6 robbers pounce on family, get away with US$14 000 and gold

SIX robbers who were heavily armed with machetes, knives, sjamboks and iron bars on Sunday pounced on an Odzi family and assaulted them before escaping with US$14 000 and 16 grammes of gold.

National police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the incident which happened at Stand Number 2 in Odzi and said the six disappeared soon after committing the crime.

“The unidentified six, who were armed with machetes, knives, sjambok and iron bars, used an iron bar to break a cottage door. They approached Faith Marara (28) and her son Jacob Gadzira (20) simultaneously in their respective rooms and started assaulting then demanding cash and gold,” he said

Assistant Commissioner Nyathi said Faith was force-marched into Jacob’s room where they were both sprayed with a toxic substance in their faces before being assaulted with a sjambok and machete.

The pair sustained serious injuries on their bodies.

Assistant Commissioner Nyathi said Jacob surrendered a small black bag which was hidden in the monarch containing $14 000 but the accused continued assaulting him.

“He was stabbed with a knife on the left thigh and he surrendered 16 grammes of gold which was wrapped in a plastic paper and hidden under the mattress.

“The six ransacked Jacob’s room and stole three Itel, one Samsung S20 and a Techno Spark Pro 5 smartphone. They also stole Jacob’s wallet which contained US$200 and bolted away,” he said.

The total value of stolen goods was US$17 000

Assistant Commissioner Nyathi appealed to members of the public with information leading to the arrest of the six to contact their nearest police station.
