A prominent Beitbridge businessman Jonathan Madhuku (29) has been jailed for 20 months after he assaulted his wife over a preg_nancy test kit that he found on the bed.
Madhuku will serve an effective 16 months after Magistrate Vavariro Gabi suspended four months of the sentence for five years. Madhuku has since engaged Patrick Tererai of Tereral legal practice to appeal against the sentence.
Vivian Rwasunda was severely injured and left with shaking teeth and eating disorders, the court was told.
Apart from the test kit issue, Madhuku is also intending to marry and bring a second wife into the home.
Two Nations attended the court session.
In his defense, Madhuku told the court that he was provoked by his wife. He said when he asked about the test kit, Rwasunda retorted and said he was luck that he did not find a used cond0m in the home.
“I found a preg_nancy test kit on the bed and when I tried to ask my wife, she warned me not be shocked as I can even find a used cond0m in the room,” said Madhuku.
Prosecutor Tawanda Chigavazira said on November 5, at around 9:35pm, the complainant had a misunderstanding with the accused over the issue of marrying a second wife.
Madhuku got angry and assaulted the complainant with open hands on the face and she sustained injuries.
