Two people died on the spot while one died upon admission as ten others were injured after the vehicle they were travelling in veered off the road at the 227km peg along Mutare-Masvingo road on February 15, 2022 at around 1600hours.
The driver John Mawarire (28) who was driving a Toyota Noah with 14 passengers on board and 17 bags of fertilizers, lost control of the vehicle leading to the accident.
Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa confirmed the accident and said victims were taken to Masvingo Provincial Hospital and some to Ndanga Hospital.
“I can confirm an accident where the driver lost control of the vehicle resulting in the vehicle veering off road and overturned several times landing on its left side. Two died on the spot while one died upon arrival at the Masvingo Provincial Hospital.
“As police, we urge motorists to avoid speeding and overloading so as to value life,” said Dhewa.
It is reported that 10 people were admitted at Masvingo Provincial Hospital and Ndanga in stable conditions as only one was seriously injured.
The deceased have since been identified as Cuthbert Gaga (64) from Kepura farm in Masvingo who sustained head injuries, Lucia Chikato (24) of Chikato village under Chief Ndanga Zaka and the last one is yet to be identified as his relatives are yet to be known.
It is said that the deceased were taken to Masvingo mortuary and the vehicle was taken to Vehicle Inspection Department (VED).
