Vladimir Putin has lost another general in the Ukrainian war, military sources in Kyiv claim.
Lieutenant General Yakov Rezantsev, 48, was killed in a strike by the Ukrainian armed forces, they say.
He was Commander of the 49th Combined Arms Army of the Southern Military District.
The Russian side has not so far confirmed the death.
Oleksiy Arestovych, adviser to the head of the President’s Office, said: “Over the past day, our troops – as we previously reported and we can now say for sure – killed the commander of the 49th Combined Arms Army of the Southern Military District of Russia, Lieutenant General Yakov Vladimirovich Rezantsev.
It comes two days after Western officials said it believed six Russian generals had been killed since Vladimir Putin launched his invasion of Ukraine on February 24.
A Lieutenant Colonel was also thought to have been captured in Ukraine in a further indication that Mr Putin’s lightning invasion plan has been derailed.
Ukraine has named seven Russian generals as having been killed since the invasion began. Moscow has so far only confirmed on dead general.
Estimates of the number of Russian casualties have varied wildly.
A Nato officer this week said the alliance estimated the figure was between 7,000 and 15,000.
Moscow’s defence ministry said that 1,351 Russian soldier have died since the country launched what it calls its “special military operation”, IFAX reported on Friday.
