Sleeping with puppies in bedroom lands lodger in court

A landlady has approached the courts to help her evict a tenant who sleeps with puppies in her bedroom.

Happy Moyo (44) and her landlady Portia Mnkandla (56) have not seen eye to eye since Moyo started sleeping with her puppies in her bedroom.

For Portia Mnkandla (56) it’s taboo to see a dog sleeping in a bedroom, but for Happy Moyo this is normal behaviour as she has been sleeping with her puppies from the time she was in Britain.

Mnkandla has been fuming and wants Moyo’s puppies to sleep outside in their kennel. But Moyo is against that as she says she cannot sleep without them and has developed a strong bond with the pets and they are like a family to her. She said there is no need for her landlady to be upset as she thoroughly cleans her bedroom each and every morning.

The landlady slapped her with an eviction notice, but Moyo is also against that and says she will only move out when she has secured a place. Since Moyo is hard to convince, Mnkandla approached the Western Commonage Court to help evict Moyo.

“My name is Portia Mnkandla. I’m applying for an eviction order against my tenant Happy Moyo. She is sleeping with her puppies in her bedroom. I have engaged her to let her pets sleep in the kennel in the yard but she does not want to accept my advice. Instead, she would shout at me and would say it is her right since she pays rent and her puppies don’t mess the yard.”

Happy said: “I see no evil in that since it’s my space that I pay rent for. She wants me to move out as soon as yesterday. I will vacate her place when I can get a place to rent even if it’s after three months”

The presiding magistrate Shepherd Mnjanja granted the pair a reciprocal order and they were told to live in harmony with each other while Moyo is looking for a place to rent.
