The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Bindura were reportedly on the receiving end from an angry mob that was celebrating on new year’s eve near Tendai Hall in Mashonaland Central capital.
Sources familiar with the incident allege Bindura police stormed Tendai Hall dispersing the mob with dogs prompting the crowd to react angrily by throwing missiles at them.
The police had to beef up their security with tear smoke and a tanker after most of them had sought refuge inside the hall where a certain church was conducting a service.
“There was pandemonium in Bindura near Tendai hall after the police tried to disperse people who were celebrating the end of 2017, marking 2018.
“The crowd resisted and overpowered them prompting them to run with their dogs inside the hall where a church service was in progress.
“After seeing danger another team came with a tanker and started throwing tear smoke,” explained the source.
However, it is not clear on who started the fire that destroyed infrastructure at the hall which was subsequently extinguished by the fire brigade.
Contacted for comment Mashonaland Central police spokesperson Inspector Milton Mundembe said he is on holiday and is not aware of the case.
“I am on holiday in Mount Darwin hence I am yet to receive that case, may be if you can contact me tomorrow, l will be able to furnish you with information,” said Mundembe.
His deputy Assistant Inspector Petros Maskati said he was off duty.
