LAWYER Fadzayi Mahere, who contested as an independent candidate for Mt. Pleasant constituency and came out third behind MDC and Zanu-PF candidates, has officially joined the opposition MDC led by Nelson Chamisa.
Mahere made the announcement herself on Wednesday evening, saying Zimbabwe deserves strong and united opposition.
Said Mahere: “Zimbabwe deserves a strong, united opposition to build the future. I’m happy to announce that I’ve officially joined the MDC.
“We must speak with one voice against bad governance and strive to create a nation that is free and prosperous. All hands on deck. God bless Zimbabwe.”
MDC leader Chamisa concurred with Mahere, saying he believes in strong teams.
Mahere rose to prominence during the #ThisFlag protests of July 2016 led by cleric Evan Mawarire.
They mounted shutdown protests against the introduction of bond notes by the administration of former President Robert Mugabe, as well as poor service delivery and the inability by the government to pay civil servants on time.
Mahere then contested the 2018 parliamentary elections as an independent candidate for Mt. Pleasant constituency.
The official results from Zimbabwe Electoral Commission came out as follows:
Sam Banda MDC Alliance – 9357

Fadzayi Mahere BTC – 4388
