Thousands of travellers thronged Mbare Musika Bus Terminus in Harare on Sunday morning to board buses for their rural homes across Zimbabwe, with most of them left stranded as there were few buses available.
There are genuine concerns that as thousands of urbanites travel to the countryside for the 21-day national lockdown, people who have been infected by the coronavirus will spread the disease to rural folk, creating an unprecedented health crisis.
Prominent local journalist Hopewell Chin’ono posted a video of the travellers on Twitter which he captioned with these words:
"As seen today at Mbare! The affluent might be able to Lockdown for 21 days, but it is futile if the poor don’t have the same protection. The State should have come up with social protection for the poor. Short of creating 2 countries, nobody is safe."
