Shadow of the Gun: The Terror Gripping Harare West

HARARE – The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) have issued an urgent appeal to the public as they intensify their hunt for a ruthless gang of four armed robbers who have turned the suburbs of Westgate, Marlborough, and Mabelreign into a theatre of violence. For weeks, these neighbourhoods have been gripped by a sense of dread as the gang conducts a systematic campaign of terror against schools, churches, and private residences. However, a significant breakthrough has emerged: one of the suspected armed robbers has had his image captured on CCTV at a crime scene, providing the police with a critical lead in their investigations.

Harare provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, confirmed that the police have obtained high-quality CCTV footage of a prime suspect. The image, which has been widely circulated, represents a major turning point in a series of robbery cases reported in Mabelreign and the Greater Harare Suburban District since February 2026. “The Zimbabwe Republic Police, Harare Province, is investigating a series of robbery cases reported in Mabelreign and the Greater Harare Suburban District since February 2026. Operations are underway to identify and apprehend the suspects,” said Inspector Chakanza.

The sheer audacity of the criminals was laid bare in the early hours of a recent Friday, when the very people tasked with protecting the public became victims themselves. It was a cold, dark morning along Northolt Road, near Divaris Makaharis School in the heart of Mabelreign, when a routine stationary patrol turned into a bloody confrontation. Inspector Magidi, along with Constables Chihanga and Nyamushamba, were seated in their white Nissan Tiida, registration number ACS 1584, keeping a watchful eye on the neighbourhood when three men wearing black balaclavas emerged silently from the shadows.

According to an internal police memo, the attackers were armed with a claw bar and a high-powered torch. The situation turned dire in seconds. “Suddenly, three male adults wearing black balaclavas appeared in front of the car armed with a claw bar and a high-powered torch,” the memo noted. Inspector Magidi, sensing the imminent threat, ordered Constable Chihanga to open fire. However, in a moment that highlights the perilous conditions under which the force operates, the officer’s service rifle jammed as he attempted to shoot through the window.

The robbers did not hesitate. They smashed the windscreen and surrounded the vehicle. Constable Nyamushamba managed to exit the car but was immediately struck on the shoulder. Inspector Magidi attempted to fight back, only to be hit on the forehead with a brick, causing him to collapse. Constable Chihanga, showing remarkable courage, fought his way out and managed to strike one of the attackers with the rifle butt, but he was subsequently beaten over the head with the claw bar. The gang seized the officers’ Heckler & Koch G3 rifle, along with its magazine, and two mobile phones—a Samsung A15 and a Tecno 10. They then jumped into the police vehicle and sped off into the night, leaving three law enforcement officers bleeding on the tarmac.

This brazen assault on the police was not an isolated incident but part of a broader, more lethal pattern. Just days prior, the sanctity of Hallingbury Primary School was shattered. Kona Mandlenkosi, a 27-year-old security guard who was simply doing his job, became the face of this tragedy. He was intercepted by a gang of three armed robbers who assaulted him with crowbars. The injuries he sustained were so severe that he later died at the hospital. The death of Mandlenkosi has sparked outrage and a deep sense of loss. Councillor Gotora, representing Ward 17, confirmed the grim details: “A security guard who was manning Hallingbury Primary School was severely assaulted by robbers and later died at the hospital.”

The robbers’ tactics are as methodical as they are violent. They appear to target institutions where they believe large sums of cash are kept. At the Village of Hope in Westgate—an institution that runs a school, an orphanage, and a church—the gang conducted a terrifying hour-long raid. Richard Chimbetete, the director of the institution, recounted the ordeal. He stated that three armed men ransacked several offices, including those of the bishop, social workers, and the finance department. The robbers eventually made off with more than US$31,000. Perhaps most chillingly, reports suggest the attackers used police-issued firearms during this particular raid, raising uncomfortable questions about the source of their weaponry.

The spree continued at Marlborough High School, an institution with a long history in the community, though the outcome there was far less lucrative for the criminals than they had clearly anticipated. Failing to access a heavy safe they believed contained a substantial amount of school fees, the frustrated robbers reportedly made off with a paltry US$28 that they found in a desk drawer. Yet, the lack of financial gain did not mean a lack of violence; the gang’s frustration was taken out on the staff they encountered. The pattern of attacking and subduing guards remained consistent, proving that for these individuals, the violence is as much a part of their operation as the theft itself.

At Mabelreign Girls High School, the terror was repeated. A guard conducting routine perimeter checks was seized by three men who had surreptitiously entered the school grounds. They force-marched him to the administration block, armed with a primitive but effective arsenal: a hammer, torches, strands of wire, pliers, and crowbars. They used the wire to tie the guard’s hands and legs, forcing him to lie on the ground. The attackers then moved to the School Development Committee (SDC) block, where they found a second guard. Without provocation, they struck him on the forehead with an unknown object, leaving him with a deep, bloody cut. After breaking through the main entrance of the administration block and dismantling a safe, they escaped with less than US$500.

This became the third school to be raided by armed robbers in Westgate, Mabelreign and Marlborough areas within a single week, a statistic that has left parents and educators questioning the safety of their children. The geographic proximity of these attacks suggests a gang that is intimately familiar with the layout of Harare West, moving with a confidence that suggests they have scouted their targets well in advance. The sheer frequency of these attacks has left the residents of Harare West reeling. Edson, a local community member, expressed the collective fear that has gripped the area. “We are living in fear of these robbers. If the Guruve murderer was apprehended by community members, we can do that as well, with the help of police officers deployed,” he said. Edson also voiced a suspicion that is beginning to take root among the public—that the robbers might be acting on inside information. “Our suspicion is now on the schools targeted. They might be keeping large volumes of money because the robbers work with information from the targeted place,” he added.

The police have responded by intensifying patrols and deploying additional resources to the affected suburbs. Inspector Chakanza described the suspects as a gang of four who have been targeting churches, schools, and private residences, using extreme violence to break into premises and subdue victims. “Operations are underway to identify and apprehend the suspects,” he stated. In a significant and deeply disturbing development, Inspector Chakanza noted that the gang is not only accused of theft and violence but also of more heinous crimes. “In some cases under investigation, sexual offences are also believed to have occurred,” he revealed, adding another layer of horror to the gang’s activities.

The authorities are urging residents to be more vigilant than ever before. The advice from the police is clear and uncompromising: strengthen home security systems, install motion-sensor lighting, avoid keeping large sums of cash on premises, and report any suspicious activity—no matter how minor it may seem—to the authorities immediately. For many residents, however, these measures feel like small, fragile shields against a very large and dangerous sword. The fact that the robbers were able to successfully overpower three armed police officers and steal their service vehicle and a high-powered rifle has deeply shaken public confidence in the ability of the police to provide protection.

As the investigations continue, the community watches and waits. The capture of the suspects is now a matter of urgent public safety. Commissioner Maxwell Chikunguru, the officer commanding Harare Province, is expected to lead an awareness campaign at Mabelreign Shopping Centre to engage directly with the frightened public. The atmosphere in the suburbs remains tense, with many families opting to stay indoors after dark and community-led neighbourhood watch groups being revitalised out of necessity.

The story of the Harare West robberies is one of a community under fire, where the institutions meant to nurture the next generation—schools and orphanages—have become targets for the most ruthless elements of society. From the tragic death of Kona Mandlenkosi to the hospitalisation of Inspector Magidi and his team, the cost of this crime wave is being paid in blood and trauma. The hunt for the gang of four continues, with the hope that the image captured on camera will finally bring an end to the reign of terror. The resilience of the people of Westgate, Marlborough, and Mabelreign is being tested daily, yet they remain united in their demand for justice and a return to the safety they once took for granted.

The economic impact of these robberies is also significant. For schools already struggling with limited budgets, the loss of thousands of dollars and the destruction of property like safes and doors is a devastating blow. The psychological toll on the students, many of whom are aware of the violence occurring on their school grounds, is perhaps the most difficult cost to quantify. Educators are now having to balance their roles as teachers with the newfound responsibility of ensuring their campuses are fortified against midnight raids.

Anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of these individuals is urged to contact Mabelreign Police Station on (0242) 305 651 or Harare Operations on (0242) 748836. The National Complaints Desk is also available on (0242) 703631, or via WhatsApp on 0712 800 197. As Inspector Chakanza emphasised, all information provided will be treated with the strictest confidentiality, and the police remain committed to public safety and security. For the residents of Westgate, Marlborough, and Mabelreign, that breakthrough cannot come soon enough. The community’s eyes are open, and their resolve is firm.

The streets of these suburbs, once known for their quiet charm and tree-lined avenues, now echo with the memories of smashed glass and the heavy silence of fear. The battle for the soul of Harare West is far from over, but the resolve of the community and the dedication of the officers who continue to patrol despite the risks remain the only bulwark against the darkness. The investigation remains ongoing, and the eyes of the nation are fixed on the detectives tasked with bringing these criminals to justice. Until then, the residents of Harare West will continue to look over their shoulders, waiting for the day when the night once again belongs to the peaceful. The sun may rise every morning over the suburbs, but for many, the shadows only truly lift when they know the perpetrators of these crimes are behind bars. The hunt for the man in the CCTV footage is not just a police operation; it is a search for the restoration of peace in a community that has forgotten what it feels like to be safe.
