In a sh0cking incident that unfolded last week, a man from Harare unleashed a violent attack, resulting in the stabbing of four individuals, including a police officer. The accused, Saratoga Masere (26), allegedly engaged in a heated argument with his father, prompting concerned neighbours to intervene on August 3, 2023.

During the altercation, Masere locked himself inside his room while exhibiting aggressive behaviour. However, when the deceased, Dino Mpofu, approached him in an attempt to defuse the situation, Masere emerged from his room armed with an okapi knife. Without warning, he charged at the gathering outside, causing panic among the neighbours.

While most managed to escape, Dino Mpofu was tragically caught by the accused, who swiftly stabbed him in the chest. Despite immediate transportation to Sally Mugabe Central Hospital, Mpofu succumbed to his injuries.

The violence did not end there, as Masere also targeted Kim Mpofu (16), the son of the deceased, and a police officer who bravely tried to subdue him. Additionally, Lameck Nguwo Mazvunara (73) fell victim to the assailant’s knife wounds and tragically passed away the following day, bringing the death toll to two.

Attempting to evade arrest, Masere fled to his rural area in Masere village, Chief Musana, Bindura. However, law enforcement authorities successfully tracked him down and took him into custody.

The body of Dino Mpofu currently rests at Sally Mugabe Hospital mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination. Masere appeared before the Harare Magistrates Court, appearing in leg irons, and was remanded in custody until August 22, 2023. He is expected to face trial at the High Court following indictment.

This harrowing incident has left the community in sh0ck and raises concerns about the escalating levels of violence in Harare.
