Chiredzi – A chilling incident of violence has left the community of Triangle in Chiredzi reeling after a 38-year-old man, Edmore Mavesere, was fatally stabbed by maize thieves.

The incident, which unfolded under the cover of darkness on the night of 25 November, highlights the escalating desperation and lawlessness plaguing rural communities.

Mavesere, a resident of Section 15, Triangle, succumbed to his injuries on 9 December, days after the brutal attack. The details of the tragic event were revealed by Masvingo Province police spokesperson, Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa.

On that fateful night, Mavesere was tending to his maize crop in his garden near Section 18, accompanied by a friend.

Inspector Dhewa recounted the events leading to the fatal stabbing: “While walking through the maize, his friend went to another part of the field and suddenly saw four men in the darkness stealing maize from a nearby garden. Two of them carried spears, and all four had sacks on their backs filled with stolen maize.”

The discovery of the theft sparked a desperate attempt to apprehend the culprits. Mavesere’s friend immediately alerted him and other community members. However, the thieves, startled by the sudden attention, reacted with brutal force.

Inspector Dhewa continued his account: “When they realised Mavesere was about to apprehend one of them, one of the thieves stabbed Mavesere in the left chest with a spear. The spear went in and was then pulled out before the thieves escaped into the darkness with their accomplices.”

The attack left Mavesere bleeding profusely. His friend and other community members swiftly transported him to Collin Saunders Hospital in Triangle. Despite receiving immediate medical attention, his condition remained critical due to the severity of the spear wound.

Inspector Dhewa confirmed the tragic outcome: “Mavesere remained critically ill due to the spear wound and eventually passed away on 9 December. His body was taken to Chiredzi Hospital mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.”

Inspector Dhewa issued a stern warning, stating: “We also warn that being found in possession of or carrying offensive weapons is a serious crime that leads to arrest and prosecution.”

This statement serves as a reminder of the legal ramifications associated with carrying offensive weapons and the importance of responsible firearm ownership. The police are urging anyone with information regarding this case to come forward.

The police have provided contact details for anyone who may have information relevant to the investigation. They can contact the police on 263392264421 or WhatsApp 0775 996 945. The investigation is ongoing, and the community awaits justice for Mavesere and a stronger commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents.
