Opposition politician Fadzai Mahere gets married lawyer Prophet Advocate Joshua in hot soup over lula lula whatsapp messages

Opposition politician and lawyer Fadzayi Mahere has lodged a formal complaint with the Law Society of Zimbabwe (LSZ) against fellow legal practitioner Joshua Chirambwe, accusing him of sexual harassment over inappropriate and lustful comments he made on a WhatsApp group they both belong to.

Chirambwe, a married self-styled prophet popularly known as Prophet Advocate Joshua, now finds himself in hot water as the LSZ has demanded he respond to the allegations within 14 days.

In her letter addressed to LSZ executive director Norman Mapara, Mahere detailed how Chirambwe’s comments had once forced her to exit the WhatsApp group, Zim Advocates. She attached copies of the messages as evidence, describing them as offensive and unwelcome.

“Previous messages of this nature caused me to exit the group. I have attached copies of the said messages to this complaint for your attention. They are published under the moniker ‘Young Money’,” Mahere wrote.

She further stated, “It is my humble view that such sexual harassment has no place in the legal profession. I therefore lodge this complaint in terms of, inter alia, clause 3(23) of SI 37 of 2018 and request that disciplinary action be taken against this legal practitioner.”

One of the messages in question saw Chirambwe referring to Mahere and another female lawyer in a manner that Mahere found deeply inappropriate. The message read: “You see … there is this woman I adore beyond words—let’s say I’m rather fond of Fadzi. And there is another lady in this group, whose elegance could give royalty a run for their money. Her character? Sweet enough to make sugar but how can I approach them?”

Mahere argued that such comments amounted to sexual harassment, as they were unwanted and made her feel disrespected and uncomfortable.

In response to Mahere’s complaint, the LSZ has formally written to Chirambwe, notifying him of the allegations and giving him 14 days to respond. Mapara’s letter to Chirambwe stated: “These allegations point to a possible contravention of By-Laws 3 (23) of the Legal Practitioners (Code of Conduct) By-Laws, 2018 SI 37 of 2018 and part 6.2.1 of the Law Society of Zimbabwe Sexual Harassment Policy, 2024.”

The letter further explained that the alleged conduct could be seen as failing to treat professional colleagues with courtesy, respect, and fairness, as well as constituting unwanted or unwelcome sexual attention of an offensive nature.

Chirambwe, who is known for his dual identity as a lawyer and a prophet, now faces the possibility of disciplinary action if the LSZ finds merit in Mahere’s complaint. The case has sparked discussions about professionalism and the need to address sexual harassment within the legal fraternity.

Mahere’s decision to speak out has been praised by many who see it as a bold step towards holding individuals accountable for inappropriate behaviour, especially in professional settings. Her complaint highlights the importance of creating safe and respectful environments for all professionals, free from harassment and discrimination.
