A crackdown on drug abuse in Mashonaland West has resulted in the arrest of 22 youths at a party in Chegutu. In Bulawayo, such parties are commonly known as Vuzu Parties and they usually end in the youths engaging in sex orgies. The operation, which followed a tip-off from concerned citizens, highlights the growing efforts to combat substance abuse amongst young people in the province.
The party, advertised through WhatsApp group links created by 23-year-old Tinashe Kamunda of Rifle Range, attracted 15 boys and seven girls. Attendance came at a cost: US$2 for boys and US$1 for girls, with an additional US$5 per person for alcoholic beverages. This detail, revealed by Provincial Acting Police Spokesperson Assistant Inspector Effort Chapoto, sheds light on the organised nature of the gathering.
Assistant Inspector Chapoto explained that police received information suggesting drug use at the party. Acting on this intelligence, they raided the premises, discovering evidence of drug abuse. “Searches were conducted around the house and it resulted in the recovery of stubs of smoked dagga, unused condoms, some liquor, and Shisha-smoking equipment,” he detailed.
Following the raid, all 22 youths were taken into custody. Their parents and guardians were subsequently notified and involved in the process. Assistant Inspector Chapoto emphasised the importance of community involvement in tackling such issues. “We thank those who supplied positive information,” he said, adding, “The bond between the community and the police always yields positive results.”
The organiser of the party, Tinashe Kamunda, faced charges of disorderly conduct and was fined for his role in the event. The remaining 21 youths also received fines and were released into the custody of their respective parents or guardians.
