Bulawayo – A 32-year-old woman from Shangani has been sentenced to community service and fined by a Bulawayo court after admitting to engaging in sexual activity in front of her 12-year-old daughter.

Adelight Ndlovu, of E70 Mine in Shangani, appeared before regional magistrate Maxwell Ncube, where she pleaded guilty to public indecency. The court handed down a fine of US$300 and ordered her to perform 210 hours of community service at Shangani Police Station, commencing on February 28.

The trial heard that on unspecified dates in 2024, Ndlovu engaged in sexual activities with multiple partners while her young daughter was present.

During her initial court appearance on February 25, Ndlovu initially pleaded guilty, but claimed she was unaware that her daughter had witnessed the sexual encounters. However, in a twist, she then denied the charges during her second appearance on February 26. Ndlovu asserted that any such incidents may have occurred in 2023, claiming that her children were residing at a different location in 2024.

After further questioning by the magistrate, Ndlovu eventually reaffirmed her guilty plea, acknowledging the gravity of her actions.

Prosecutors emphasised the seriousness of the offence, arguing that Ndlovu’s behaviour represented a grave breach of parental responsibility. They urged the court to impose a custodial sentence, highlighting the potential harm caused to the young girl.

Notably, Ndlovu was not represented by a lawyer during her trial. The court’s decision reflects the seriousness with which such cases are viewed, particularly when they involve the exploitation and endangerment of children.
