Kwekwe police have launched a full-scale investigation following a brazen daylight theft in the city’s central business district. On June 4, 2025, thieves made off with a staggering US$46,000 in cash from a parked vehicle along E.D. Mnangagwa Road.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the incident, stating that the suspects were travelling in a Toyota Mark X bearing registration plates AGI 4348. They targeted a parked Mazda CX-5, breaking the rear right quarter glass to gain access.
According to the ZRP statement shared on X, the thieves then snatched a bag containing the substantial sum of US$46,000 before fleeing the scene.
Subsequent investigations have revealed a crucial detail: the number plates on the getaway vehicle were fraudulent. The plates actually belong to a blue Mazda Demio, suggesting a level of planning and sophistication in the crime.
Harare Company Hit by Armed Robbery: Over US$73,000 Stolen
Meanwhile, in Harare, a company in Chisipite has fallen victim to a daring armed robbery, with thieves making off with over US$73,000 in social saving contributions for various employees.
Ten suspected armed robbers reportedly targeted Alpha Asset Management along Steppes Road on Wednesday. The suspects, clad in balaclavas, long black coats, and gloves, displayed a high degree of organisation and ruthlessness.
Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the case. “Police are investigating an armed robbery case in Chisipite. Total value stolen is US$73 401,” said Insp Chakanza.
The robbers gained entry by removing roofing sheets and breaking through the ceiling into the reception area. They proceeded to break two cash boxes, obtaining safe keys, office keys, and car keys.
The suspects then forced open the data office door and cut all wires connecting the alarm system. Gaining entry into the company director’s office, they stole a laptop bag that was later dropped by the gate.
Using the keys found in the cash boxes, the robbers opened the strong room. Inside, they used a grinder to open three Chubb safes, stealing US$30,151 belonging to individual personal funds of Alpha Asset Management.
After that, they forced open the door to the front office, ransacked the office and stole US$41 200, which was in an envelope in a drawer. The money was for social savings contributions for various employees at the company.
In addition to the cash, the robbers also made off with 30 Stanley thermo cups and US$400 that was in another drawer, before disappearing into the night.
The two incidents, in Kwekwe and Harare, highlight the ongoing challenges faced by businesses and individuals in Zimbabwe regarding security and the prevalence of crime. Police investigations are ongoing in both cases, and authorities are appealing to the public for any information that may lead to the apprehension of the suspects.
