Harare – Zimbabwe is in mourning following the death of former Deputy Finance Minister David Chapfika, who tragically died in a car accident on Thursday morning. He was just weeks away from his 68th birthday next month.

The accident occurred along the Harare-Shamva Road, near Stordon Empire Farm in Goromonzi, an area where Chapfika owned a farm. His brother, Clifford Chapfika, confirmed the devastating news to The Herald.

Reports indicate that Chapfika’s Mercedes-Benz ML veered off a bridge, plunging into a shallow river and landing on its roof. He was reportedly killed on the spot after colliding with another vehicle.

David Chapfika was a prominent figure in Zimbabwean politics and finance. He served as the Deputy Minister of Finance under the late President Robert Mugabe. He was also a former Member of Parliament for Mutoko South, representing the ZANU PF party. At the time of his death, he was a serving member of the ZANU PF Central Committee.

Beyond his ministerial role, Chapfika also chaired the influential Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Finance and Economic Development, and previously chaired parliament’s public accounts committee. Former Norton MP Temba Mliswa remembered him as “quite an intelligent and astute person in many things.”

Chapfika’s career extended beyond politics. He was a former banker, bringing his financial expertise to his roles in government and parliament.

The news of Chapfika’s death has been met with sadness and disbelief. Ironically, in 2021, rumours circulated falsely claiming that he had died from COVID-19 complications. These reports were later proven to be untrue. This time, however, the confirmation of his passing has brought genuine grief to those who knew him and followed his career.

Clifford Chapfika, speaking to The Herald, shared the family’s sorrow at the sudden loss. The nation awaits further details surrounding the circumstances of the accident as investigations continue. David Chapfika leaves behind a legacy of service to Zimbabwe, remembered for his contributions to finance and economic development.
