HARARE – Tragedy unfolded at Chikurubi Damview on Sunday when a dispute over fishing nets between two former inmates turned deadly, claiming the life of 27-year-old Tanyaradzwa Innocent Muzari.
Muzari had been fishing with Stanley Dhlamini Tutani, 46, his former neighbour and friend from Chamboko Farm in Gletwin. The two men, both with troubled pasts, had forged a bond during their time at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison. Tanyaradzwa served eight years for rape, while Stanley was previously incarcerated for poaching.
Upon completing their sentences, they became involved in fish mongering at the ZPCS Damview, seemingly turning a new leaf. However, their friendship soured approximately two weeks prior to the fatal encounter, leading to a heated misunderstanding.
The incident occurred at around 3 am on Sunday, as the two men were allegedly engaged in illicit fishing at the guarded dam. Tensions flared when Muzari confronted Tutani, accusing him of stealing his fishing nets. The argument quickly escalated into a physical confrontation.
According to Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, “In the midst of the struggle, the accused attempted to drag the deceased towards the deep end of the water.”
An informant, witnessing the escalating violence, attempted to intervene, but to no avail. “Despite attempts from an informant to intervene, the situation worsened,” said Inspector Chakanza.
The informant carried Muzari for about 15 meters in an effort to seek help. Upon returning, he discovered Muzari unresponsive. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding Muzari’s death.
