Terror in the Suburbs: The Ruthless Gang Haunts Harare West

HARARE — In the quiet, leafy suburbs of Harare West, where the hum of generators once provided the only nocturnal soundtrack, a new and far more sinister noise has taken hold: the heavy tread of police boots and the hushed, fearful whispers of residents. A wave of brutal armed robberies, characterised by extreme violence and a chilling disregard for human life, has left the communities of Marlborough, Mabelreign, and Westgate in a state of high alert. At the heart of this escalating crisis is a notorious four-man gang, led by figures known only by the ominous aliases ‘Satan’ and ‘Captain’, whose recent exploits have culminated in the tragic death of a young security guard and the systematic looting of local institutions.

The most recent victim of this ruthless campaign was 27-year-old Kona Mandlenkosi, a security guard stationed at Hallingbury Primary School. In an incident that unfolded between Monday evening and Tuesday morning, Mandlenkosi was allegedly ambushed by three armed men. The assailants, wielding crowbars and half-bricks, subjected him to a savage assault. He sustained a deep, traumatic cut to his head, just above the left ear. Despite being rushed to a nearby private emergency hospital for urgent treatment, the young guard succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. His death is not merely a statistic; it is a grim testament to the increasing lethality of the criminal elements now operating with impunity in the capital’s western reaches.

A second guard at Hallingbury Primary School narrowly escaped a similar fate. Upon witnessing the brutal attack on his colleague, he fled into a bushy area within the school grounds. Though he survived, he did not escape unscathed, sustaining injuries to his right palm and the back of his left shoulder as he scrambled through the dense undergrowth. The case, now registered at Mabelreign Police Station under RRB 6701269, has become a focal point for an intensified police investigation.

The raid at Hallingbury was not an isolated event that night. Approximately six kilometres away, Marlborough High School was also targeted. Four armed robbers pounced on the government institution, though their primary objective—breaking into the school’s safe—proved unsuccessful. Frustrated but undeterred, the gang turned their attention to the two security guards on duty. The men were overpowered, their hands and legs bound tightly with wire. The robbers then systematically searched the guards, making off with their mobile phones and a meagre sum of US$28. While the financial loss at Marlborough High was minimal compared to other raids, the psychological toll on the staff and the surrounding community has been profound.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed last night that investigations into both the Hallingbury and Marlborough incidents are in full swing. Speaking to H-Metro, he provided a measured but firm response to the growing public anxiety.

“We are investigating those two cases, and we will be issuing a detailed statement in due course. In the meantime, we just urge the communities to be responsible with whatever information they are circulating. Police have made adequate deployment in the affected areas,” said Commissioner Nyathi.

The “adequate deployment” mentioned by the Commissioner includes specialised units from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), the Dog Section, and the Support Unit. Their presence is a direct response to a string of robberies that have targeted not just schools, but also the very foundations of community life: churches and orphanages.

The shadow of ‘Satan’ and ‘Captain’ looms large over these incidents. According to Ward 41 Councillor Kudzai Kadzombe, this four-man gang has been “terrorising” the Marlborough community for weeks. Their list of targets is as diverse as it is audacious, including construction sites, companies, and residential properties. Most disturbingly, they have repeatedly targeted places of worship. The Celebration Church, the Roman Catholic Church, and the Apostolic Faith Mission (AFM) have all reportedly fallen victim to the gang’s predations.

Perhaps the most harrowing example of the gang’s brutality occurred on March 15, 2026, at a ZAOGA Church in the area. Walter Mapfumo, a security guard on duty that night, was murdered in a manner that defies comprehension. Reports from the scene indicated that the assailants did not merely kill Mapfumo; they allegedly gouged out his eyes before fatally stabbing him. This act of senseless cruelty has left a permanent scar on the local psyche, reinforcing the warning issued by Councillor Kadzombe in a widely circulated community message.

“Please help us in identifying this man, who is part of a 4-man gang terrorising our Marlborough community using the aliases ‘Satan’ and ‘Captain’. They have been responsible for a string of robberies at construction sites and churches, including Celebration, Roman Catholic, and AFM, as well as the death of the Zaoga Church security guard. This Easter holiday, they have been targeting companies and residential properties,” Kadzombe’s message read.

She further urged residents:

“1. Do not approach — If you recognise this man or have any information, do not confront him. He is considered armed and dangerous. 2. Report directly to the police — Share any photos, descriptions, or details immediately. If you have any information, please contact the Officer in Charge of Marlborough Police Station, Mr Miziri, on +263772377625. I continue to urge residents to participate in and strengthen neighbourhood watch efforts in their areas. We need to be vigilant and protect ourselves, our properties, and the safety of our families.”

The gang’s sophistication was on full display during a recent raid on the Village of Hope Institution in Westgate. This facility, which serves as a school, an orphanage, and a church, was subjected to a meticulously planned hour-long siege. Three armed men gained entry and immediately neutralised the security personnel. One guard, who attempted to resist with a .22 rifle, was quickly overpowered. The robbers struck him repeatedly with a rifle butt before handcuffing him and dragging him to a borehole pump room, where his legs were tied with electric cables.

A second guard was ambushed and struck with a blunt object as the gang proceeded to the administration offices. They systematically looted safes and cash boxes across multiple departments. The financial devastation was staggering: US$2,500 from the Human Resources office, US$250 from Finance, US$200 from the Social Worker’s office, a massive US$25,000 from the Director’s office, and US$1,200 from the Bishop’s office. In total, over US$30,000—funds desperately needed for the care of vulnerable children—was stolen.

In a deeply troubling development, investigators discovered that the gang was wielding a police-issued G3 rifle during the Village of Hope raid. The weapon had been stolen just days earlier during an ambush on three police officers—Inspector Magidi, Constable Chihanga, and Constable Nyamushanga—near Devaris Makaharis School on Northolt Road. The fact that criminals are now using stolen police weaponry against the community they are meant to protect has added a layer of complexity and danger to the ongoing manhunt.

The escalating violence in Harare West is part of a broader, more systemic trend across Zimbabwe. National crime statistics for the final quarter of 2025 revealed a 12.1 per cent increase in criminal offences, with over 426,000 cases recorded. Throughout 2025, the police registered more than 1,200 armed robbery cases. Security firms like Safeguard have also noted a sharp uptick in criminal activity, reporting a 27 per cent increase in incidents in the early months of 2026 compared to the previous year.

Police officials have suggested that “insider leaks” may be contributing to the rise in targeted robberies, particularly those involving large sums of cash. However, for the residents of Sunridge, Greencroft, and Haig Park, the theoretical cause is of less concern than the immediate reality of their insecurity.

Reverend Happymore Gotora, a local leader and councillor, has been at the forefront of the community’s response. After visiting Hallingbury Primary School to brief the school head, deputy, and the School Development Committee (SDC) chairman, he issued a poignant appeal for increased protection.

“Today we woke up to sad news once again in our Ward as we lost a life due to robbers. A security guard who was manning Hallingbury Primary School was severely assaulted by robbers and later died at the hospital. This is the second time in a fortnight that we have lost lives due to robbers. This has caused great security concerns in our neighbourhoods and something need to be done as a matter of urgency to protect and enhance security of our residents,” Reverend Gotora stated.

He expressed a fear shared by many: that the gang, having exhausted institutional targets, will soon turn their attention to private homesteads.

“Residents are now living in fear as a result of the continued cases of robbery particularly in areas such as Sunridge, Greencroft, Westgate and Mabelreign. The robbers have been targeting institutions such as churches and schools. The fear is they will proceed to also attack homesteads,” he warned.

As the police beef up their patrols with reinforcements from the Dog Section and the Support Unit, the message to the public remains one of extreme caution. Reverend Gotora’s advice to his constituents is a stark reminder of the current climate:

“I encourage residents to be on alert and report any suspicious incidents in our neighbourhoods. Let’s not open doors during the night even for the people we know as they may have come under duress from robbers. Let’s immediately call the police if something unusual or suspicious is happening.”

The battle for the safety of Harare West is far from over. While the deployment of specialised police units offers some hope, the elusive nature of the ‘Satan’ and ‘Captain’ gang, combined with their increasing firepower and ruthless methods, means that the community remains on a knife-edge. For the family of Kona Mandlenkosi and the staff at the Village of Hope, the scars of this crime wave will remain long after the headlines fade. The search for justice continues, but in the quiet streets of Marlborough and Westgate, the shadows of fear have yet to be dispelled.
