A Zimbabwe Republic Police constabulary died after collapsing shortly after performing for guests at the Harare Provincial Heroes Acre during Heroes Day commemorations on Monday.
Shem Ganda, aged 57, was seated behind the Police Junior Call team when he collapsed. He was rushed to Parirenyatwa Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival, according to a report citing the police.
Ganda is survived by his wife and eight children and is expected to be buried at his rural home in Madziwa. Shortly before he fell ill, he had taken part in drills for guests at the provincial Heroes Acre.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the death and said investigations into the circumstances were under way. Ganda’s body was taken to the Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals mortuary, where it was awaiting a post-mortem examination. The cause of death had not been publicly established at the time of publication.
Ganda had spent more than 20 years associated with the Police Junior Call programme and was remembered by colleagues as a committed community-policing advocate. The initiative works with young people through community-policing activities, anti-crime prayer sessions and awareness campaigns on drug and substance abuse.
His death has prompted mourning in Chitungwiza and within the police service, where he was regarded as a driving force behind the Junior Call programme and community safety work.
