Brazilian woman needs help to leave Zimbabwe prison
Karoline Silva Mafra, a Brazilian woman, is currently stranded at Chikurubi Female Prison in Zimbabwe despite being acquitted of drug trafficking charges last year.
Karoline lacks the money for an airplane ticket home and does not have a passport. This has sadly resulted in Karoline spending almost a year imprisoned despite being declared legally innocent.
Some online comments made light of Karoline’s situation, but many readers wanted to help her gain freedom. While Karoline seemed resigned to her situation, Zimbabwe’s justice system declared her innocent.
Of the three accused in Karoline’s case, one was found guilty and two were acquitted. Like the other acquitted person now free, Karoline deserved release to return home. The public called for a way to help Karoline after her story came to light.
Even those who serve time deserve a second chance. Karoline has spent almost 11 months behind bars. With assistance, she could leave Zimbabwe and rebuild her life in Brazil surrounded by loved ones.
Though thousands of miles from home and family, Karoline’s prayers for freedom may soon be answered through compassion and assistance from good Samaritans.
