A horrific crash on the Harare to Chirundu highway has claimed 9 lives and left 12 others injured. The accident occurred Monday evening when a Nissan Caravan collided head-on with a Honda Fit vehicle.

According to police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the Nissan was carrying an unknown number of passengers while the Honda Fit had 7 people inside. All the occupants of both vehicles either died or suffered injuries in the crash.

The injured have been taken to Sally Mugabe Central and Inkomo hospitals for treatment while the bodies of the victims were transferred to Norton Hospital mortuary.

In a separate accident early Monday morning, 3 people were killed and 4 others injured in a crash involving a Toyota Hilux and a Mthethi bus. The Toyota swerved off the road before hitting the trailer of the Mthethi bus, said Assistant Commissioner Nyathi. The victims’ bodies were sent to Gwanda Provincial Hospital for autopsies and the injured are receiving treatment at the same hospital.

Assistant Commissioner Nyathi urged the public to avoid unregistered pirate taxis, noting that the Honda Fit involved in the crash had 7 passengers. “Drivers need to follow the rules and avoid dangerous driving that causes unnecessary loss of life,” he stressed.

Condolences go out to the families mourning the loss of their loved ones.
