Daughter of popular sungura musician Alick Macheso says being a woman is hard.

According to HMetro, Macheso’s daughter, Stacy, made some concerning posts on Instagram stories voicing her struggles as a woman.

In one story, Stacy wrote that “Being a woman is hard, you get abused physically and verbally but we’re told to stay….It is my fault that I am woman, do I really have to suffer all this because I am a woman?”

In another post, Stacy said she worries her daughter will face the same struggles, writing “I cry every day…is she going to be assaulted and insulted as if she’s nothing and is she going to be treated with no respect with people and no one is going to be there for her even her husband? God, why?”

However, later on the same day Stacy deleted the stories and wrote:

“Hi everyone, I’m sorry for this but I didn’t mean I’m being abused, ndataura sekumirira vakadzi … I love my husband, we fight here and there but it doesn’t mean that I am being abused.”

While the motive and accuracy of Stacy’s posts remain unclear, her writings nonetheless shine a light on the difficulties many women face in abusive relationships. The troubling issues she raised around gender-based violence and women’s rights in Zimbabwe deserve further discussion.
