A dispute over music selection at a nightclub in Umguza, Bulawayo turned violent last week, leaving a 48-year-old man with a seriously injured eye.

Taruvinga Zvinokona and some friends were drinking at the nightspot when he requested that the DJ play some dancehall music. Another patron, Forman Ndlovu (33), took offense to Zvinokona’s request, accusing him of undermining the music choices of others.

The two men began arguing and soon the verbal altercation turned physical. During the fight, Ndlovu allegedly picked up a log and struck Zvinokona repeatedly, hitting him in the head and right eye.

Zvinokona collapsed and was rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital. Doctors determined that his right eye had been severely damaged in the attack.

Police were notified and Ndlovu was arrested. He appeared in court before Regional Magistrate Dambuzo Malunga, charged with attempted murder. Ndlovu pleaded not guilty and was remanded in custody until his next court date on July 25.

The incident highlights the dangers of what begins as minor disagreements escalating into violent assaults, leaving victims with life-altering injuries. Disputes over matters as trivial as music choice should never justify such excessive violence.
