Gweru – A horrific road accident on the Gweru-Zvishavane Road has claimed the lives of four people and left seven others injured after a Toyota Ragius ACE omnibus overturned. The tragedy occurred at the 20-kilometre peg around 08:30AM on Thursday, April 17, 2025.
According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), the accident was triggered when the vehicle’s right rear tyre burst, causing the driver to lose control. The omnibus then somersaulted before landing back on its wheels, leaving it a twisted wreck.
“The ZRP confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred at the 20 kilometre peg along Gweru-Zvishavane Road on April 17, 2025, at around 0830 hours,” said ZRP national spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi. “Four people died while seven others were injured when a Toyota Ragius ACE omnibus overturned before landing on its wheels after the vehicle’s right rear tyre burst.”
A witness who arrived shortly after the crash described a scene of chaos and devastation. “The sound of that tyre bursting was like a gunshot… then the screams followed,” they recounted. Survivors were seen crawling from the crumpled vehicle, while passers-by rushed to offer assistance.
The bodies of the deceased have been taken to Gweru Provincial Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations. The injured are currently receiving treatment at the same hospital.
Commissioner Nyathi has urged public transport operators to prioritise the regular servicing of their vehicles to prevent further loss of life on Zimbabwe’s roads.
