GOKWE – Eight individuals have tragically lost their lives in a horrific head-on collision involving a Trip-Trans passenger bus and a haulage truck along the perilous Gokwe–Kwekwe Road. The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the devastating incident, which occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, 27 May 2026, at approximately 05:00 hours, near the 110-kilometre peg towards Kwekwe.

The fatal crash unfolded when the Trip-Trans bus, carrying 36 passengers, reportedly attempted to overtake another vehicle. This manoeuvre led to a direct impact with an oncoming haulage truck, resulting in immediate fatalities and numerous injuries. “The ZRP confirms the death of eight people in a fatal road traffic accident which occurred today at 0500 hours at the 110 km peg along Gokwe–Kwekwe Road towards Kwekwe. A Trip-Trans bus with 36 passengers tried to overtake and collided with a haulage truck,” read a statement released by the police following the tragedy.

This latest catastrophe adds to a grim tally of road accidents plaguing Zimbabwe, particularly involving heavy vehicles and passenger carriers. The nation has witnessed a disturbing surge in such incidents, often attributed to factors such as reckless driving, poor road conditions, and inadequate vehicle maintenance. The ZRP has consistently appealed to motorists to exercise extreme caution, especially during periods of reduced visibility like early mornings and late nights, when many of these fatal crashes tend to occur.

The incident on the Gokwe-Kwekwe Road is not an isolated event but rather a stark reminder of the persistent dangers on Zimbabwean highways. Just two days prior, on Monday, 25 May 2026, six lives were claimed in another collision on the Harare–Bulawayo highway. In that incident, a Honda Fit collided head-on with a haulage truck at the 223-kilometre peg near the Redcliff turn-off at approximately 17:45. The recurring involvement of haulage trucks in these fatal head-on collisions highlights a critical area of concern for road safety authorities.

Further underscoring the severity of the situation, Saturday, 23 May 2026, saw another tragic loss of life when eight members of the Roman Catholic Church perished. Their Toyota Noah vehicle veered off the Deka River Bridge near Hwange, striking concrete barriers and overturning at around 07:00. The group was returning from overnight prayers at St John’s Makwa Mission. These incidents, occurring within days of each other, paint a distressing picture of the state of road safety across the country.

The Trip-Trans bus company itself has not been immune to such unfortunate events. On 21 December 2025, forty passengers narrowly escaped death when a Trip-Trans bus veered off the road and rammed into a ditch. While no fatalities were reported in that particular incident, it serves as a reminder of the potential hazards associated with passenger transport and the importance of stringent safety protocols. Another incident involving a Trip-Trans bus occurred on 25 July 2025, when it was involved in a serious collision with two other vehicles near the Hunani bridge. These occurrences raise questions about the operational safety measures and driver training within such transport companies.

Haulage trucks, due to their sheer size and weight, often contribute to the catastrophic nature of accidents. On 4 April 2026, a particularly shocking incident saw seven people, who had stopped to assess an earlier accident, tragically killed by a speeding haulage truck that approached the crash scene. This highlights not only the danger posed by these large vehicles but also the secondary risks at accident sites. Earlier, on 30 March 2026, three individuals seated on the roadside were crushed to death when a haulage truck driver lost control of his vehicle along the Norton-Murombedzi road. These events underscore the devastating impact that haulage truck accidents can have, often extending beyond the immediate occupants of the vehicles involved.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police have repeatedly voiced their concern over the escalating number of road traffic accidents and associated fatalities. During the 2026 Easter holiday alone, 30 people were killed in road traffic accidents across Zimbabwe. The ZRP reported a surge in fatalities on the country’s roads, with 77 people losing their lives in over 1,000 accidents during a recent period. These statistics are alarming and point to a systemic issue that requires urgent and comprehensive intervention.

Road safety remains a critical challenge in Zimbabwe. Factors such as speeding, driving under the influence, fatigue, and the general disregard for traffic regulations are frequently cited as primary causes of accidents. Furthermore, the condition of some roads, particularly in rural areas, can exacerbate the risks. The ZRP continues to urge vigilance and adherence to traffic laws, emphasising that road safety is a collective responsibility.

As investigations into the Gokwe-Kwekwe Road crash continue, the nation once again grapples with the profound grief and economic toll of such preventable tragedies. The call for enhanced road safety measures, stricter enforcement of traffic laws, and improved driver training becomes ever more urgent in the face of these recurring devastating incidents. The lives lost are not mere statistics but individuals whose absence leaves an indelible void in families and communities across Zimbabwe.
