AKACHIBATA KUTI DZVII: Leaked Audios Expose Kuda Tagwirei’s Secret Grip on Zimbabwean Politics!

HARARE – Zimbabwe finds itself embroiled in a deepening political controversy following the emergence of explosive audio recordings that purportedly lay bare the immense, clandestine influence wielded by prominent businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei. These revelations, which have quickly become the subject of intense public debate, suggest a level of control that extends far beyond conventional business dealings, hinting at a shadow government where key national decisions and appointments may be orchestrated away from public scrutiny. The audios, featuring two interlocutors known to The NewsHawks, reveal Tagwirei’s hidden business and political grand plan, strategy, tactics, and a burning ambition to succeed President Emmerson Mnangagwa in 2030 to become President.

At the heart of the matter are allegations that Tagwirei, often referred to as a ‘kingmaker’ in these recordings, exerts significant sway over the highest echelons of Zimbabwean power. The leaked audios, which surfaced in May 2026, suggest that even high-ranking officials might be beholden to Tagwirei’s interests, raising serious questions about the true locus of power in the Southern African nation. The audio confirms many things already known to be true to the public, including that Tagwirei views himself as the de facto Prime Minister of the country, co-running government with President Emmerson Mnangagwa. Critics argue that such influence fundamentally undermines democratic processes and fosters an environment ripe for corruption, where national resources and policies could be manipulated for personal gain. If these allegations hold true, it suggests a systemic capture of the state by powerful economic elites, turning the official political structures into mere facades, leaving citizens to ponder the true impact of their votes.

The Allegations: A ‘Kingmaker’s’ Reach

The content of the leaked audios paints a vivid picture of Tagwirei’s alleged deep involvement in national affairs. According to claims made within the recordings, Tagwirei purportedly boasts of being a “kingmaker” within the system, claiming that President Emmerson Mnangagwa consults him on cabinet appointments and major government decisions. Furthermore, the recordings suggest that Tagwirei meets with the President twice every week to discuss political and economic matters, a claim that, if substantiated, would underscore an extraordinary level of access and influence. This makes Tagwirei feel unstoppable in his political agenda, which includes taking over more sectors of the economy, making bigger money, and using it to influence the military and politics for him to eventually become President in 2030.

One of the most startling claims from the audio pertains to legislative processes. The preacher in the recording alleges that proposed legislation affecting small-scale miners was directly driven by Tagwirei’s own mining expansion ambitions. This suggests a calculated effort to influence policy to tighten his control over the sector and potentially remove smaller operators, thereby consolidating his economic power. Such an assertion highlights the potential for private interests to shape national laws for personal benefit, bypassing democratic scrutiny.

Beyond legislative influence, the audios delve into the delicate realm of political succession. According to the audio, once the contentious Constitution Amendment Bill No. 3 is passed by parliament and signed into law – a bill that seeks to extend presidential and parliamentary terms from five to seven years – attention would allegedly shift towards a “second war” targeting Vice President Constantino Chiwenga. Tagwirei supposedly views Chiwenga as his main stumbling block and the primary obstacle to his own future presidential ambitions in 2030. The audio suggests that Mnangagwa himself does not want Chiwenga to succeed him. This succession battle against Chiwenga, who is fighting tooth and nail to take over from Mnangagwa, poses a direct threat to Tagwirei’s 2030 presidential aspirations. The audio also mentions that Tagwirei and former Zimbabwe Defence Forces commander retired General Philip Valerio Sibanda are widely seen as contenders in the increasingly cutthroat race to State House. One of the most controversial moments in the recording includes an alleged declaration linked to Tagwirei stating: “I am the next president.” This audacious claim, if true, reveals a profound ambition that transcends mere business influence and ventures directly into the political leadership of the nation.

A Web of Influence: Military, Judiciary, and Wealth

The alleged reach of Tagwirei extends even further, encompassing critical state institutions. The preacher claims that Tagwirei boasts of having influence over senior military commanders, intelligence officials, police bosses, and members of the judiciary. These are the pillars of state power, and any alleged control over them would signify a comprehensive capture of the state apparatus. The audios also suggest that ministers regularly visit Tagwirei’s home, with the notable exceptions of President Mnangagwa, his vice presidents, and Sports Minister Anselem Sanyatwe, further illustrating his perceived centrality in the political landscape.

The recordings also touch upon Tagwirei’s vast wealth and the measures taken to protect it. Extravagant claims are made about his security arrangements, including allegations that his property is protected by drones, heavily guarded by security personnel, and contains a steel vault. The audio says Tagwirei is already a billionaire who controls key sectors of the economy and plans to hold further sway on mining, land, health, education, and energy through lined-up money-spinning multi-million-dollar business deals. Through policy influence, Tagwirei is tightening his grip on the gold sector while barring foreigners from coming in, owns vast tracts of land, plans to build a health empire, to control student accommodation, and have a stranglehold on fuel distribution. This plan, he thinks, will make him an even more powerful billionaire and in the process propel him to become President. At another point, the preacher alleges Tagwirei claimed to control massive petroleum reserves, identifying businessman Billy Rautenbach, another close ally of Mnangagwa, as his only serious financial rival. He views himself as far more monied than other local tycoons such as Wicknell Chivayo and Pedzisayi Scott Sakupwanya. The conversation also references these politically connected businessmen, painting a picture of an interconnected network of economic and political power.

The Sentry Report and International Scrutiny

These recent audio leaks are not the first time Kudakwashe Tagwirei’s business practices and political connections have come under intense scrutiny. A comprehensive report titled “Shadows and Shell Games: Uncovering an Offshore Business Empire in Zimbabwe,” published in 2021 by The Sentry, an investigative and policy organisation, previously exposed the intricate web of his offshore dealings. The report detailed how Tagwirei used complex corporate structures, often involving entities in Mauritius and the Cayman Islands, to build and conceal his wealth. It highlighted his investments in gold, nickel, platinum, and chrome mines, frequently operating behind South African businesspeople and opaque offshore structures.

One of the most significant revelations from The Sentry report concerned the alleged involvement of the military in Tagwirei’s business ventures. The report claimed that Tagwirei paid millions of dollars to a military-owned company, Pen East Mining, to acquire a 50% stake in Great Dyke Investments (GDI), a platinum mine. This transaction raised serious concerns about “off-budget financing of Zimbabwe’s abusive and partisan military,” as noted by The Sentry. The report also pointed to instances of preferential treatment, such as a five-year corporate income tax holiday granted to GDI, retroactively applied, and the appointment of Tagwirei’s oil trading company, without a tendering process, to run a $1 billion agriculture project known as Command Agriculture. These instances, among others, led to accusations of state capture, where public policy and regulatory decisions are influenced to benefit private interests.

International bodies have also taken action. In August 2020, the United States imposed sanctions on Tagwirei, citing his role in “materially assisting senior Zimbabwean government officials involved in corruption.” The US Treasury stated that “Tagwirei and other Zimbabwean elites have derailed economic development and harmed the Zimbabwean people through corruption.” The United Kingdom followed suit in 2021, imposing sanctions on Tagwirei for profiting from the misappropriation of property, specifically through his company Sakunda Holdings.

Denials and the Quest for Authenticity

The emergence of the leaked audios has naturally led to a flurry of reactions, including denials from individuals mentioned. Flamboyant preacher Passion Java, whose alleged conversation with a journalist forms the basis of the audio, has vehemently distanced himself from the controversy. In a video statement, Java claimed the audio might be AI-generated, stating: “I distance myself 100% from all that is being said in the audios. I don’t know where it’s coming from or where it’s going.” He further clarified that while his brother, Pastor Batsirai Java (Apostle B Java), was also mentioned, he was not involved in any of the matters discussed. Pastor Batsirai Java also released his own video, asserting: “I am not the person in that audio, this is my voice, this is me speaking and I am not even in communication with the person who is at the end of that audio.”

These denials, while attempting to quell the controversy, have done little to dampen public speculation. The debate on social media has been fierce, with some questioning the authenticity of the recordings, while others argue that they merely reinforce long-standing public concerns about the intersection of business, religion, and political power in Zimbabwe. The timing of the audio leaks, amidst heightened political tensions surrounding Constitution Amendment Bill No. 3, adds another layer of complexity to the unfolding narrative.

The Ramifications for Zimbabwean Democracy

The implications of these allegations, if proven true, are profound for Zimbabwe’s governance, economy, and the future of its democracy. The concept of an “invisible hand” pulling the strings of power suggests a fundamental erosion of democratic principles, where accountability and transparency are severely compromised. When key political decisions and appointments are allegedly orchestrated behind closed doors, away from public scrutiny, the very essence of representative government is undermined.

The alleged systemic capture of the state by powerful economic elites, as hinted at in the audios and detailed in previous investigative reports, transforms official political structures into mere facades. This scenario leaves citizens with a critical question: do their votes truly matter when an unelected, powerful figure can allegedly influence the trajectory of the nation to such an extent? The allegations of Tagwirei’s influence over legislative processes, military commanders, and the judiciary paint a grim picture of a state where the lines between private interest and public duty have become dangerously blurred.

The ongoing debate surrounding the Constitution Amendment Bill No. 3, which seeks to extend presidential terms, further intertwines with these allegations. The claim that this bill is a “done deal” due to Tagwirei’s influence suggests a disregard for public consultation and parliamentary oversight, reinforcing fears of an increasingly authoritarian state. The alleged rivalry with Vice President Chiwenga and Tagwirei’s purported presidential ambitions add a dramatic dimension to the political landscape, hinting at future power struggles that could further destabilise the nation.

Ultimately, this investigative piece aims to unmask the hidden details of this alleged power dynamic, providing citizens with a clearer understanding of the forces shaping their nation. The allegations, whether fully substantiated or not, highlight the urgent need for greater transparency, accountability, and robust democratic institutions in Zimbabwe to ensure that the will of the people, not an invisible hand, truly guides the nation’s destiny.
