Former Tanzanian leader Julius Nyerere told President Robert Mugabe that he had inherited “a jewel in Africa, do not tarnish it,” when Zimbabwe attained independence in 1980.
Decades later the “jewel of Africa” has become the “blight” or “eyesore” of Africa, Zimbabwe is a pariah state with the largest refugee population for a country that is not at war, millions of Zimbabweans are scattered all over the world.
Last year while launching a book titled Julius Nyerere: Asante Sana, Thank You Mwalimu at State House yesterday, President Mugabe said Nyerere’s commitment to the liberation, unity and development of Africa was “legendary”. But did Mugabe heed to Nyerere’s advise? If Mugabe had listened to Nyerere where would Zimbabwe be today?
