Three friends died in a tragic car accident early Sunday morning in Rusape after a night of drinking and speeding.

The driver, Never Mashinga, is critically injured in Rusape General Hospital.

Police spokesperson Inspector Muzondo said Mashinga was driving a Honda Fit along the Rusape-Wedza Highway with passengers Sniejder Tsingana and Simbarashe Nyarota. He was speeding while under the influence of alcohol.

As he turned left at high speed, Mashinga lost control of the vehicle. The car flipped multiple times and landed on its roof, throwing the passengers out. Tsingana died instantly at the scene while Mashinga and Nyarota suffered serious injuries.

Nyarota later died from his injuries on Tuesday afternoon at Parirenyatwa Hospital in Harare, while Mashinga remains hospitalized in Rusape.

In a separate incident, police are searching for a hit-and-run driver who fatally struck a Form One student along the Mutare-Harare Highway last week.

Inspector Muzondo said Takudzwa Maukazuwa was walking along the highway when an unknown driver in a Toyota Runx hit him. Maukazuwa sustained head injuries and died upon arrival at Rusape General Hospital.

The Runx vehicle was later abandoned along Old Tsanzaguru Road on Taylor Farm. Police seized the vehicle and are investigating.

Inspector Muzondo urged all drivers to follow the rules of the road, be cautious at all times, and report any accidents.
