Alleged drug kingpin arrested in Harare cocaine bust
In a significant development in the ongoing battle against drug peddling, the Zimbabwe Republic Police have announced the arrest of Eleph Khumbula Gula-Ndebele, a 39-year-old man suspected of being a key figure in a local drug distribution network.
According to the statement released by ZRP spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, Gula-Ndebele’s arrest came after a victim of drug abuse, Tsitsi Vundla, provided information implicating him in the illegal drug trade. Vundla had been arrested in March 2024 as part of the police’s crackdown on the suspected drug ring, which also led to the apprehension of several other individuals, including Talent Mapanga, Takunda Godoka, Tanaka Chimuka, Tapiwa Mutebuka, and Sam Chasaya.
On May 24th, 2024, detectives from the CID Drugs and Narcotics unit in Harare acted on a tip-off and apprehended Gula-Ndebele at a residence along Knightsbridge Road in the Highlands suburb. During the arrest, a sachet of cocaine was discovered hidden in the front door panel of the suspect’s Volkswagen Polo, registration number ABF 8319.
“There is no going back in the fight against drug and substance abuse in the country,” said Ass Comm Nyathi.
“Members of the public are implored to continue supplying information to the Police pertaining to suspects involved in drug and substance abuse on National Complaints Desk number (0242) 703631, WhatsApp on 0712 800 197 or report at any nearest Police Station.”
The arrest of Eleph Khumbula Gula-Ndebele represents a significant victory in the ongoing war against illicit drugs.
