Headlands – A horrific road accident near Yorkshire in Headlands along the Mutare-Harare Highway has claimed the lives of six people. The tragedy occurred last night around 7:30pm at the 142-kilometre peg, when a Honda Fit collided head-on with a heavy truck.

The accident involved a Honda Fit and a Sino Howo truck belonging to Chris Logistics. The truck was travelling towards Harare, while the Honda Fit, carrying six passengers including the driver, was headed in the direction of Rusape.

Initial reports suggest that the Honda Fit was speeding and attempted to overtake a tractor on a blind curve. In doing so, it allegedly encroached into the path of the oncoming truck, resulting in the devastating head-on collision.

The impact of the crash was so severe that the Honda Fit became trapped beneath the truck and was dragged for approximately 50 metres. Tragically, all six occupants of the Honda Fit sustained severe injuries and died at the scene.

Their bodies were subsequently transported to Rusape General Hospital mortuary, where they await post-mortem examinations.

National police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the accident, stating, “It is true that the accident happened last night, and we will be issuing a press statement to that effect within the next hour or so.”

Rusape General Hospital Medical Superintendent, Dr Stewart Karembo, also confirmed receiving the bodies at the hospital mortuary. “According to the report we received, the accident occurred near Yorkshire (Headlands) last night, resulting in the death of all six passengers in the Honda Fit. Their bodies were subsequently brought to Rusape General Hospital mortuary,” he said.

The accident highlights the dangers of speeding and reckless overtaking on Zimbabwe’s highways. Authorities are urging motorists to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent further loss of life. The police are expected to release a more detailed statement on the accident in due course, including the names of the deceased people, following further investigations into the circumstances surrounding the collision.
