Woman pretends to be a man, lives together as husband and wife with girl (16), uses fake manhood for lula lula

In the ghetto suburb of Epworth, a community known for its vibrant street life and close-knit neighbourhoods, a story of elaborate deception and heartbreak has emerged that challenges the very foundations of trust. At the centre of this unsettling narrative is Shamiso Melinda Sigara, an eighteen-year-old resident of Overspill, who stands accused of orchestrating a months-long charade to win the affections of a sixteen-year-old girl.

The tale began in November last year when Sigara first approached the complainant. According to court documents and state prosecutors, Sigara did not present herself as a young woman but rather as a man, proposing love to the impressionable teenager. The minor, whose identity is protected due to her age, accepted the proposal, unaware that her suitor was living a lie.

The deception reached its peak on 12 February this year. Prosecutors claim that Sigara arranged for the complainant to move into her home, effectively convincing the girl to flee her parental house to live together as “husband and wife.” For a brief period, the two resided under one roof in what the teenager believed was a conventional relationship.

However, the facade began to crumble under the cover of darkness. The State alleges that during the night, while the two were asleep, Sigara used an unidentified object to assault the complainant twice, all while continuing to maintain the pretence of possessing male genitalia. It was this physical encounter that finally raised the alarm.

The traumatised teenager eventually confided in her mother, revealing her growing suspicion that the person she was living with was not the man he claimed to be. A police report was filed the following day, leading to Sigara’s swift arrest.

Appearing before Harare magistrate Jessie Kufa over the weekend, Shamiso Melinda Sigara was not asked to plead. She currently faces charges of aggravated indecent assault, a serious offence under Zimbabwean law. The prosecutor, Oscar Madhume, outlined the State’s case, which paints a picture of a calculated and predatory scheme. Sigara has been remanded in custody pending further bail considerations.

This case is not an isolated incident in the region’s history of bizarre gender deceptions. In May 2022, a similar “mind-boggling” case gripped the Honde Valley when Morris Muchena, a man who disguised himself as a woman named Emily Muswere, was discovered to have been “married” to Andrew Chafa for sixteen months. In that instance, the community was left reeling after it was revealed that Muchena had even managed to maintain intimacy with his “husband” without being detected for over a year.

Furthermore, the legal landscape in Zimbabwe regarding such acts is stringent. Aggravated indecent assault, particularly involving minors or extreme deception, carries heavy penalties. The Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act provides the framework for these prosecutions, often highlighting the vulnerability of victims in cases where trust is fundamentally betrayed through identity fraud.

The social implications of Sigara’s alleged actions are profound. In many Zimbabwean communities, the sanctity of the family unit and the traditional roles of “husband and wife” are deeply respected. When these roles are used as a tool for deception, the psychological impact on the victim and the wider community can be lasting.

The complainant’s mother, who acted swiftly once the truth was suspected, has become a central figure in the pursuit of justice. Her decision to involve the authorities immediately after her daughter’s confession underscores the gravity of the situation.

As the legal proceedings against Shamiso Melinda Sigara continue, many are left wondering how such a deception could be maintained for months. The unidentified object mentioned in the charges remains a key piece of evidence, potentially proving the premeditated nature of the assault.

For now, the eighteen-year-old remains behind bars, her life of masquerading brought to an abrupt end by the very person she sought to “woo.” The case serves as a stark reminder of the lengths some will go to for companionship, and the devastating consequences of building a relationship on a foundation of lies.

The Harare Regional Magistrates’ Court is expected to hear further details as the investigation into Sigara’s background and motives continues. In a world where identity can be easily manipulated, this case stands as a cautionary tale for the residents of Epworth and beyond.
