The Tabernacle of Grace Siege: Why Police Targeted Tsvangirai’s Son-in-Law

The morning air at the Tabernacle of Grace (TOG) headquarters in Harare was thick with tension this past Monday as a dramatic police operation unfolded. According to Gambakwe News, nine detectives from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), arrived in a fleet of five vehicles, and laid a determined siege to the church’s Grace Centre. For hours, the headquarters of one of Zimbabwe’s most prominent religious institutions became a scene of intense interrogation, as officers sought the whereabouts of its leader, Apostle Batsirai Java.

This was not a random check. The operation was the culmination of a series of visits, including a Sunday raid at the church’s premises in Tynwald and Ruwa by officers in an Isuzu vehicle, registration number AFU 9923. While the official reasons for the police action remain somewhat opaque, reports reveal a complex web of political intrigue, sibling rivalry, and allegations of state capture that have turned a place of worship into a battleground for Zimbabwe’s elite.

The Audio that Ruffled Feathers

The catalyst for this unprecedented move appears to be a 33-minute-long viral audio recording leaked last week on Wednesday. In the recording, a voice allegedly belonging to Apostle Java is heard in conversation with a senior journalist. The contents are nothing short of explosive. The audio lays bare the alleged plans of controversial businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei to become Zimbabwe’s next president.

According to the claims made in the recording, Tagwirei boasts of being a “kingmaker” who consults President Emmerson Mnangagwa on cabinet appointments and major government decisions. More controversially, the audio suggests that Tagwirei has effectively “captured” state institutions, including the army, judiciary, police, and prisons. It alleges that the businessman meets the President twice every week and views the controversial Constitution Amendment Bill No. 3 (CAB3) as a “done deal” that will help him bury the presidential ambitions of Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga.

“I am the next president,” a statement linked to Tagwirei in the recording declares. These words have reportedly caused significant distress within the corridors of power. While Tagwirei’s online backers have dismissed the audio as a hoax, the speed and scale of the police response suggest that the authorities are taking the matter very seriously.

A Family Divided: The Java Brothers

To understand the weight of this incident, one must look at the unique position of the Java family in Zimbabwe’s political landscape. Apostle Batsirai Java is the widower of the late Vimbai Tsvangirai-Java, the eldest daughter of the late Morgan Tsvangirai, the founding president of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) and Zimbabwe’s most iconic opposition leader. Vimbai, who served as the Member of Parliament for Glen View South, died in 2019 following a tragic car accident near Kwekwe. Her marriage to Batsirai tied the Java name to the Tsvangirai legacy, positioning the Apostle as a figure associated with the struggle for democratic change.

In stark contrast stands his younger brother, Prophet Passion Java. Flamboyant and wealthy, Passion Java is a staunch supporter of ZANU-PF and a loyalist to President Mnangagwa. He is often seen at “ED-Pfee” functions and has used his vast social media following to campaign for the ruling party. This creates a fascinating, yet volatile, dynamic: two blood brothers standing on opposite sides of Zimbabwe’s deepest political chasm.

Passion Java has since released a video from the United States, where he is currently staying, to distance himself from the scandal.

“I distance myself 100% from all that is being said in the audios. I don’t know where it’s coming from or where it’s going. Of course Java is my blood brother. I’m not sure it is him, it’s AI-generated,” Passion stated. He added, “Me and Apostle Java, remember, he is a great man of God, anointed, and nothing changes his calling from God. We are just different in our political positions. Remember, he was married to a Tsvangirai, and then I stand now with Mnangagwa.”

Despite these words of brotherly support, the audio suggests that the information about Tagwirei’s plans was originally told to Passion, who then relayed it to Batsirai. Both brothers have denied any involvement in the recording, with Apostle Java issuing his own statement: “I am not the person in that audio, this is my voice, this is me speaking and I am not even in communication with the person who is at the end of that audio.”

The “Angel” on the Warpath

Adding another layer to this saga is the involvement of Prophet Uebert Angel, the founder of Spirit Embassy and President Mnangagwa’s special envoy to the Americas and Europe. Sources close to the situation claim that Angel is leading an onslaught against Apostle Java, allegedly vowing to ensure his arrest.

The rift between Angel and Java is long-standing and bitter. Insiders claim Angel views Java as a rival whose reputation for integrity has drawn followers away from Spirit Embassy to the Tabernacle of Grace. Before the CID raid on Monday, associates of Angel had already begun predicting Java’s arrest.

One source claimed, “Angel has been fighting Apostle Java for years.”

There were also rumours of allegedly trying to hire girls to frame Apostle Java for rape. The animosity reached a terrifying peak in 2024 when Apostle Java’s aide, Nigel Dutiro, filed an official police report at Harare Central Police Station (RRB number 141472) alleging an assassination plot. The report claimed that Angel had hired hitmen from South Africa to eliminate Java. While the police confirmed an investigation was underway at the time, no charges were brought forward. Now, the leaked audio — which also contains details implicating Angel — has provided fresh fuel for this feud.

Broader Implications for Freedom of Worship

The siege at the Tabernacle of Grace is not an isolated event but part of a worrying trend regarding religious freedom in Zimbabwe. In March 2026, churches in the Mudzi district were reportedly ordered by ZANU-PF officials to cancel their Sunday services to allow congregants to attend a political rally. Such actions have raised concerns that the state is increasingly using its power to intimidate religious organisations that do not explicitly align with the ruling party’s agenda.

The targeting of Apostle Java, given his links to the Tsvangirai family, is seen by many as a politically motivated move. It highlights the “hidden tensions” mentioned in the church’s summary of the events. Is this a legitimate law enforcement operation investigating a potentially seditious recording, or is it a calculated attempt to silence a prominent voice that is perceived as a threat to the established order?

A Community in Waiting

As the dust settles on Monday’s raid, the religious community in Harare remains on edge. The interrogation of workers and pastors, including Apostle Java’s younger brother, Pastor Simba, has left many wondering who will be next. The CID has yet to disclose the specific charges they intend to lay, leaving a vacuum of information that is being filled by speculation and fear.
