A 9-year-old girl sadly lost her life after falling while fleeing from Nyau dancers who passed by her school in Harare, Zimbabwe. Makanaka Reppoh was among the students who ran away when the Nyau dancers appeared.

The tragic incident occurred at the Eastwise Primary School gate. Makanaka lived with her grandmother.

Police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Webster Dzvova confirmed the girl’s death and said her body was taken to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals for an autopsy.

According to the police, on May 15 around 4:30pm Makanaka was waiting for transport after finishing school. Suddenly, Nyau masqueraders carrying whips appeared and all the children, including Makanaka, ran to a nearby street vendor.

Makanaka fell down during the commotion. When things calmed down, efforts to resuscitate the child were unsuccessful. She was taken to Pacific Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
