Zimdancehall artist Takura Chiwoniso, known by his stage name Blot, was arrested on Wednesday for illicit drug abuse.
Police officers found Blot using crystal meth while parked in a Toyota Corolla in Sunningdale, Harare. A plastic bag containing drugs was also recovered from the vehicle.
Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, spokesperson for the Harare provincial police, confirmed Blot’s arrest and urged the public to report drug dealers and users in their communities.
Inspector Chakanza said “Police arrested an illicit drug abuse suspect in Sunningdale. The suspect is expected to appear in court soon.”
Residents of the Sunningdale neighborhood expressed frustration over the increase in youth drug abuse in the area, particularly along Matiza Road and kuChimbarembare uko.
A resident said “We are worried about the serious abuse of drugs taking place in Sunningdale, especially along Matiza Road and kuChimbarembare uko. Blot has been one of the users and a number of youths’ lives have been ruined by mutoriro. We are appealing for a clean-up exercise to save our children.”
Blot now faces charges related to drug abuse and possession, and is expected to appear in court soon. His arrest highlights the challenge of drug abuse among Zimbabwe’s youth and artists.
