Bulawayo police have apprehended a security guard accused of breaking into the DHL main offices and stealing a sum of US$1,815 and ZAR2,400. The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Malvin Chimange from Entumbane suburb, was employed as a security guard at the DHL offices, according to Inspector Abednico Ncube, the spokesperson for the Bulawayo police.

Inspector Ncube released a statement confirming the arrest and providing details of the alleged crimes committed by Chimange. Between July 3, 2023, and August 15, 2023, the accused is said to have gained unauthorized access to the offices using undisclosed means. Once inside, he specifically targeted cash in different offices.

The initial theft occurred when Chimange stole US$315 from a drawer in one office. He then proceeded to another office and took US$600. On a separate occasion, using the same modus operandi, he stole US$900 and ZAR2,400 from yet another office. However, thanks to the closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage, the company was able to identify the culprit and subsequently report the incident to the police.

“On the 11th of August 2023 the CCTV footage was viewed and it showed the accused person stealing the money leading to his arrest,” stated Inspector Ncube. He further revealed that a portion of the stolen money, amounting to US$1,460 and ZAR2,400, was recovered.

In light of this incident, the police have urged companies to remain vigilant against internal theft. Inspector Ncube emphasized the significance of safeguarding premises against crimes committed by individuals entrusted with security responsibilities.

“As police we urge companies to guard against inside job crimes, clearly these crimes were committed by someone who was supposed to guard the premises,” urged Inspector Ncube.

The accused, Malvin Chimange, is currently in police custody and will face charges related to burglary and theft. The authorities hope that the successful resolution of this case will serve as a deterrent to potential offenders and encourage companies to strengthen their security measures.
