Chipinge woman faces consequences for violent domestic dispute

In a disturbing incident that unfolded in Chipinge, a 36-year-old woman found herself in legal trouble after a violent altercation with her 41-year-old husband. The woman was arraigned before the Chipinge Magistrates’ Court on charges of contravening the Domestic Violence Act.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), the incident occurred on December 18th, 2023, when the couple had a heated disagreement over the husband’s spending habits with his second wife. In a fit of rage, the accused woman reportedly went outside the house, returned with a cup of hot cooking oil, and poured it directly onto her husband’s face and shoulders.

The victim suffered severe burns on his face and shoulders as a result of the scalding attack. The consequences were swift and severe – the woman was sentenced to 24 months in prison, with 6 months of the sentence suspended for 5 years. The remaining 18 months were wholly suspended on the condition that she performs 630 hours of community service.

This case serves as a sobering reminder that domestic violence will not be tolerated.

Meanwhile, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe has urged the public to find peaceful ways of resolving disputes, rather than resorting to violence and taking the law into their own hands.
