Newly-elected MDC-T secretary-general and Nyanga North legislator Mr Douglas Mwonzora was yesterday arrested on charges of fraud.
Although details were still sketchy last night, it is understood the case involves misappropriation of US$15 000 in trust funds.
National police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said: "Yes, I can confirm the arrest of Mr Mwonzora. It is in connection with misappropriation of trust funds."
The former MDC-T spokesperson who is also a lawyer by profession in not a stranger when it comes to getting arrested. Earlier this year, the Nyanga North MP had a rough patch with law enforcement agencies when he was arrested in April for allegedly assaulting a party youth member for aligning himself to Tendai Biti’s faction which was calling for leadership renewal.
Mwonzora, who was later released without being charged after spending seven hours in the hands of the police, said on the day in question, he was in Masvingo for a rally.
In February 2011, Mwonzora was arrested as he left Parliament Building in Harare after being accused of taking part in violence that rocked Nyanga in that same month. By then, Mwonzora who was the Copac Co-Chairperson, spent a staggering 25-day stint in custody before being released on 10 March.
